Trustees Attend Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Event听
On November 10, Trustees attended the grand opening of the 24/7 Sports Bar at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Sacramento Kings coming to California, where the team held its 1985 and 1986 training camps at 糖心破解版.听
糖心破解版 men鈥檚 basketball coach Doug Cornelius joined Trustees and college leaders to receive a $10,000 donation from Hard Rock in recognition of the Kings鈥�
40-year legacy and their historic connection to Yuba County. This support will further strengthen opportunities for听student-athletes听and the 糖心破解版 athletics program.听

Meet Our Staff: Robert Stoddard, Fire Technology听Coordinator听and Instructor听
If听you鈥檝e听ever walked through the 糖心破解版 Fire Technology program,听there鈥檚听a good chance听you鈥檝e听seen Robert Stoddard in action鈥攇uiding cadets through drills, sharing hard-earned wisdom, or simply encouraging the next generation of firefighters to reach for their full potential.听
Robert has been a dedicated member of the 糖心破解版 community since 1988, serving as the Fire Technology Coordinator and Instructor. Over the years,听he鈥檚听trained countless students who have gone on to serve in fire departments across the region.听听
He enjoys preparing future firefighters for a career in the fire service and helping both volunteer and career firefighters enhance their skills and prepare for promotions. Robert鈥檚 passion for teaching mirrors his lifelong connection to the fire service and his belief in the value of hands-on learning.听听
Outside the classroom, Robert鈥檚 interests might surprise you. A self-proclaimed LEGO enthusiast, he not only collects them but also builds elaborate creations in his dedicated LEGO room! When听he鈥檚听not building or teaching,听you鈥檒l听often find him听tending听his garden or spending time with family and friends.听
Robert鈥檚 favorite book is听The Hunt for Red听October,听his go-to movie is the original听M.A.S.H., and his favorite TV show is the classic听NCIS. After a long day, he enjoys winding down by planning his next vacation with his wife.听
When reflecting on his career and the wisdom听that鈥檚听guided him, Robert recalls advice from his father:听
鈥淚f you love what you do, you鈥檒l never work a day in your life.鈥� 
That advice has clearly served him well. Today, Robert says听he鈥檚听most excited about continuing to invest in the future of the fire service鈥攕omething he does every day through his students.听
He also carries with him a favorite quote that he shares with every new academy class:听
鈥淭he meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.鈥� 鈥斕�William Shakespeare听
And in true Robert fashion, he continues to live by that philosophy, giving back to his community in new ways. Most recently, at age 61, he took on a new challenge鈥攂ecoming the Fire Chief of the Meridian Fire Protection District.听
With a lifetime of service, passion, and a few听LEGO听builds along the way, Robert Stoddard is a true example of what it means to find your gift鈥攁nd share it generously.听

Honoring Board President Ric Teagarden听
At the November 13 Board Meeting, Board President Ric Teagarden听was presented with a plaque by Board Vice President Cornelius to thank him for serving as the Board President for 2024-2025, which was his third time as the Board President.听The rest of the Board and Chancellor Pan joined in to thank Trustee Teagarden for听his outstanding dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to both the Board and the District. His听strategic and听thoughtful guidance continues听to make a meaningful impact on the听District听community, shaping policies and initiatives that support student success and the听District鈥檚听mission.听听听

Chancellor Pan offers monthly virtual Chancellor鈥檚 Open-Door sessions.听听As a reminder, these informal gatherings provide faculty, staff, and students across the 糖心破解版 an opportunity to engage directly with the Chancellor.听Have a question, idea, or just want to say hello? State Fiscal Outlook and Implications for Community Colleges听
The Legislative Analyst鈥檚 Office (LAO) recently released its听, highlighting key challenges and opportunities for California鈥檚 state budget. This outlook has significant implications for schools and community colleges, particularly as the system experiences growth and rising costs.听
Key Highlights听
- $18听billion听budget shortfall听projected for 2026鈥�27, about听$5 billion听higher than the Governor鈥檚 June estimate.听
- Structural deficits听could reach听$35 billion听annually听starting in 2027鈥�28, posing long-term challenges for the state.听
- Revenue growth is heavily influenced by听AI-driven stock market gains and high tech-sector earnings, which may be temporary.听
- Proposition 98 funding听will require a听$5.1 billion听increase听for schools and community colleges, with听$7.4 billion听in one-time funds听also projected.听
- Community colleges are expected to see听~2.9% enrollment growth听in 2026鈥�27, driven by demographic trends and dual enrollment programs.听
- A听2.51% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA)听is projected for schools and colleges.听
- Ongoing funding gaps of听$1.7 billion听remain听as one-time funds continue to support recurring educational programs.听
- Rising statewide costs鈥攊ncluding pensions, retiree health care, corrections, Medi-Cal, and CalFresh鈥攁dd听additional听pressure.听
- State reserves are lower than in previous years, reducing the state鈥檚 ability to respond to economic downturns.听
Implications for Community Colleges听
While Proposition 98 funding is projected to increase next year, the听anticipated听growth across the community college system presents a challenge for the state to fully fund the increases expected by individual districts. Rising enrollment, operational costs, and reliance on one-time funds for ongoing programs emphasize the need for careful financial planning.听
We will continue to听monitor听state budget developments closely and keep colleges informed as the process unfolds, ensuring districts have the information needed to plan for growth and听maintain听student success.听
